I've implemented it already.

The patch that is included will make it possible to use
proxy auth. Just modify the configuration from

http_proxy = host:port

to

http_proxy = user:password@host:port

the patch must be aplied in the same directory as
apt_proxy.py

Have fun

with newer version of apt I received warnings about
unsafe packages. It was no big thing to get the
signing keys and I think it is a good thing.

Unfortunately apt-proxy has no support for
handling of gpg signs. Are there any plans to bring
up support for this?

Will apt-file be suportet by apt-proxy?

Bye bye
defining different transfer protocols for plain text files
and gzipped files (like .debs)

With my very low connection I lose a lot of time doing
apt-get updates, so I would like to use rsync for these
files, and http for debs

Full support for multiple distributions

Support for multiple distributions is somewhat broken
(in 1.3.0 at least) resulting in aggressive removal of
packages due to the multi-dist nature of the .deb pool
structure.

For example, say that an apt-proxy cache supports a set
of "woody" machines. If one of the machines is
upgraded to "testing" ("sarge"), then many "woody"
version-level debs will be flushed from the cache by
the new "testing" version-level debs. Any time a
down-level version of one of these packages is needed
by a new or existing "woody" installation, then it will
unnecessarily need to be re-fetched from the back-end
source.

With 100's of version-levels differing between
"testing" and "woody," this effectively means that
multiple distributions cannot harmoniously be cached by
apt-proxy.

Must a separate apt-proxy be used for each
distribution, or is there a better way to support
multiple distributions?

apt-proxy fails on non-linux OS

apt-proxy does not work with the system supplied
utilities on solaris (and probably any other non-linux
OS).

i had to install GNU date (for shellutils) and GNU dd
(from fileutils), install readlink (from the debianutils
package). and run the script with bash, because there are
a number of bashisms in the script that real /bin/sh's
don't grok.

it seems to work now, but hey, it would be so nice if that
thing would also run on other platforms without having to
install half a GNU box.
