i've set stockfish to play at a specific ELO (per engine options) so i can practice things, but short of selecting the first line in the running analysis, there doesn't appear to be a way to get the engine to make the move without human intervention. the AUTO RESPOND (PLAY ENGINE?) button, when clicked, doesn't appear to do anything other than start/stop the engine. help uses the same icon/button image for AUTO RESPOND and PLAY ENGINE.
having said that, if i click on the MOVE INTERVAL slider, the engine will sometimes play a move at that point. the slider is set for an interval of 00:01, which could be either 1 minute or 1 second per move. if it's 1 minute per move, it's still not moving after a minute... at one point, i was seeing depth 45 and 00:06:32 as part of the analysis.
i've also attempted to run a game/engine match with time odds. so far, the odds are ignored and the display posts 30:00 for both players. timer doesn't run down, and the engine doesn't make a move without human intervention.
i'm missing something, but it's not obvious to me which it is... please tell me there's a more informative help file that talks about human/engine play i've yet to come across.
thanks.

apologies for the bug name. at one point, i could not find AUTO RESPOND, as the icon/image/button was hidden by other icons/buttons/images, and it wasn't obvious AUTO RESPOND was there until i decided to try moving those icons/buttons/images around...
true title: UNABLE TO PLAY AGAINST ENGINE
thanks :)
