synaptic and apt-get fetch files from the repository quickly. debcache doesn't, because it is searching the directory structure on the repository, but that really is not necessary...just go get the files you need! This should simplify the script a lot and make it a lot faster. Unfortunately that also means changing it, which takes time and effort, but it's a necessary fix.

When you start having many machines (more than three, say), then it seems that debcache spends a lot of time downloading data, once for each machine. Downloaded data in the form of directory reads aren't being cached, and they ought to be.

md5sums for Release contents managed badly

If you have the same path in multiple Release files (e.g. universe/binary-ia64/Packages.gz, for different source archives) then debcache complains wrongly about that.

Don't use -clean switch!!

pool files to go the wrong place

pool files should be distributed by distro, e.g. pool/ubuntu/pool, pool/debian/pool. Instead they are like
pool/hardy/pool, pool/etch/pool, pool/gutsy-updates/pool, etc. That's wrong and not useful.

Doesn't work for mixed distros

Debian and Ubuntu have identically named pool files with different contents. So the pool files for the different distros have to be segregated.
