Hi folks,
I've extremely hesitated to report something that did work for me and now is no
longer working. I did perform extensive testing which trashed a dozed CDs,
even rebooting.
I've seen failure 1.2.13 (I have other problems with the other versions).
The following seemingly impossible statements are true.
* I have pointed "./new" to a meaningful directory, and made a working
boot 1.2.13 CD
* it is not a cd recorder issue as I can make bootable CDs from both the
original boocd.iso image and a previous bootcdnew.iso image
I do crank down to "speed=4", to be safe.
* I am no longer am able to make a working CD image using "custom-cd"
with a meaningful or empty "./new"
For my most recent attempt
I created a fresh dir from the 1.2.13 586 SMP .tar.bz2 file
created an empty ./new dir
booted without configuration media
it got past the "Do you want to boot without media [y/n]?"
at some point, it started a very fast never-stopping scroll of
kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k binfmt-9653, errno = 8
The messages during the creation process were:

As far as the other distributions:
I'd use 1.2.14, but the 3 minutes it takes to realize there are no
RAID partitions
on my diskless system is something I'd rather avoid.
I'd use 1.3.6, but eth0 is not working (on a separate post.)
I think I had similar custom-cd failure with 1.2.14 or 1.3.6.
Any suggestions about what is going on would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Chip

Hey, did you set up the interface via the setup program? If not, can you try? It would also be helpful if you post your ifcfg-eth0 file here. Hi folks, I'll retype what it says: -------------------- #/etc/init.d/network start eth0 Statring DHFP client daemon on interface eth0 dhcpcd: MAC address = 00:50:8d:e3:63:9a # --------------------- It never says "Starting interface eth0" I've setup the same way I did for earlier versions 1.2.14 & 1.2.13, loading the eepro100 module for eth0. (It does not start at boot either.) I'm fairly newbie, so I might be missing something obvious. Please advise me. Thank you, Chip |

Hi folks, I just joined. This is my first time attempting to develop in a group like this. I'm prolly missing something obvious to everyone else. I tried running cvs -d:pserver:ano...@de...:/cvsroot/devil-linux login & nothing happens after I hit return at the CVS password prompt until cvs [login aborted]: connect to devil-linux.cvs.sourceforge.net(66.35.250.92):2401 failed: Connection timed out I'm using Concurrent Versions System (CVS) 1.12.13 (client/server) under ubuntu 7.04 as a virtual machine hosted by gentoo. (I wanted to mention gentoo, since ubuntu does not seem like the OS of a developer.) Please advise me. Thank you, Chip |

The /tmp/ file won't exist on a normal CD boot, so it's not going to make any difference for normal boots from CD. So, I have no problem with the modification. - BS |

I'm sorry, I had to explain the logic as a whole instead of requesting approval for a part. So, the idea is a quite straightforward: if DL is installing from DL (i.e. the system was booted up from cd and then install-on-usb/hdd was executed) I'm able to define what block device/fs modules have to be preloaded - and I modify initrd in order to keep only necessary modules there. Then I set the marker /tmp/PROBE_ALL_MODULES. So, since I'm not able to load only really necessary modules (udev behavior) I load all modules but remove unnecessary ones before. That's it. Please inform me If you don't like that addition. I'm not sure that it's a really brilliant idea and it must be included to our mainstream codebase. -- Serge |

There doesn't seem to be any other reference to it in linuxrc. - BS |

Hello, I'm going to add 3 lines of code to linuxrc in order to load all modules if the marker was found. It seems to be harmless. I've downloaded it and booted up an available VIA c3 based box.
Works perfect!
There is a minor remark (or I've misunderstood something?)

I uploaded the most recent build of DL 1.3 to the FTP server: devil-linux-1.3.6-2008-05-31-i586-bs.tar.bz2 The DL version was bumped from 1.3.5 to 1.3.6 to correspond with the new 2.6.25 kernel. See the CHANGES file for more detailed update info. - BS |

If you compile your own DL, please read: I just made changes in menuconfig, under "build configuration", to select either AUFS or UnionFS for /etc, but not both because of a conflict between the two in kernel 2.6.25. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you select one or the other and update your .config (save your changes) before you compile next time, otherwise you won't get either, and your resulting ISO won't boot! If you're unsure which one to select, pick AUFS. At this time, we plan on using AUFS for official releases. - BS |

If I'll be able to make a fresh build I'll try to investigate the problem. -- Serge |

Oh I have the same issue.... ;-) Seems like the latest aufs has problems with the latest kernel. Here's a workaround for now (forcing the use of unionfs): edit the file tmp/ISO/cdtree/sbin/pre_init comment out this line: mount -n -t aufs -o br:/shm/etc-mods:/etc-cd=rr none /shm/etc and remove # from this line: mount -n -t unionfs -o dirs=/shm/etc-mods:/etc-cd=ro none /shm/etc then delete the files tmp/.done_iso* and do a "make makefile" -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. |
