&lt;p&gt;I've played around with a number of folder synchronization programs on Windows.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;I settled on Robocopy for the moment. You might want to look at the Robocopy options as it may give you some ideas for things to implement.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;One important feature is the ability to mirror read-only files. Microsoft's SyncToy has a problem with this, but Robocopy handles it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;My second priority has been the ability to copy open files. Robocopy doesn't do this, so I'm still looking for the perfect free program. I don't know if you have this problem in Linux; unlike Windows, I don't believe files are routinely locked when they are opened. The Windows solution is to use the shadow copy service. I don't know if there is any way to access this from Java and it's certainly a platform-specific feature, but it's necessary if a user wants to create a mirror backup.&lt;/p&gt;
