I've implemented this functionality, you can look, how it works here:
http://kibergus.su/node/11
Now I just want to share this code with others. It still needs some more work and may be won't suit everybody out of the box, but at least it works. I've written additional information about this pathc here:
http://kibergus.su/node/16

compatibility to Sqlite database

The current version of Google Map Integration does not work if Gallery 2 uses a Sqlite database.
This is easily fixed with the attached patch:
- add db schemas for Sqlite
- use getFunctionSql where SUBSTRING was hard-coded before

Add exif data from raw images.

I put the latest available MAP module onto my test gallery, along with ~1000 raw images from my camera. Unfortunately the map module did not import any GPS information.
After a quick update to the exifer module, exif displays correctly for raw images.
I made a couple of quick tweaks to the map class, and now GPS data from raw images can be imported.
I can make this code available if you wish, however, it would make the module dependant on the exif module (didn't want to re-invent the wheel)

I can only test against Canon CR2 images, unless someone can provide new ones.

Add ability to set center and zoom via url params

Manually set center and zoom of main map view via url parameters (i.e., g2_view=map.ShowMap&g2_mapCenter=-102.76253,35.29953&g2_mapZoom=14). These should override any automatically-derived values.

Auto Center and Zoom should be two separate options

I'd like to select a default zoom level of my choosing for the map, however if I disable the auto function, the map is always centered around position (0,0), which is somewhere in the atlantic ocean off the african coast and not very useful accordingly.

Since each picture may be located at a different position around the globe, no fixed location setting makes sense, so I think auto center with a selectable zoom level would make most sense.

Use EXIF tags automatically

I've just uploaded a bunch of geotagged pictures to my gallery and use the map module for the first time with my gallery 2.3(head).

What puzzles me is that in order to get a map link next to each of my ~200 pictures, apparently I'd need to click on "Edit Photo", "Google Map", "Get via EXIF headers", "Save". At ~30s per photo this would mean clicking around for more than 1 1/2 hours!

Am I missing something here, or why doesn't the map module just use EXIF georef information if it's present in a picture?

MiniMap Interaction

Often I cannot get the information I want from the default zoom setting of the minimap... either it is too far zoomed in on a region (e.g. it's showing state level detail when I want to know the the country), or it's too far zoomed out (showing state-level when I want to know which street). I got around this by enabling scroll wheel zoom, which allows the user to change the zoom level without cluttering the interface with zoom controls. I also removed the "disableDragging" command, which had been getting called if controls aren't shown. It seems like an incorrect assumption that if a gallery user doesn't want visible controls they also don't want the map to be interactive. Possibly a second variable should be used to enable/disable interaction?

This is the change I made:

{if $showControls}
map.addControl(new GSmallMapControl(false, false));
{else}
+    //map.disableDragging();
-    map.disableDragging();
{/if}
+   map.enableScrollWheelZoom();
{rdelim}

Prev/next link in info window

Display a Previous/Next link with icon in info window.

Resize map when browser is resized (only if size is in %)

Resize map when browser is resized (only if size is in %).

Easy geotagging interface

Easy geotagging interface. Something like in picasaweb would be very handy: select an album for geotagging. Map is displayed, and all pictures in album listed as small thumbnails. Pictures already on map are marked with a watermark. User can drag a picture on map and move it around. User can remove a picture from map by dragging it off.
In general: when having more than 100 pictures the admin existing UI is very hard to use.
