Env: 17/08/06 20:53 Objet: question regarding log4plsql Hi Guillaume, I found this great article about log4plsql at http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/moulard_log4plsql.html It indicated that you are the key contributor. I'd like to know the current state-of-the-art of log4plsql. Specifically, are the features mentioned in the article being implement by now: "In its first release, you were able to manage logs and traces in an Oracle table, inside or outside the current transaction. The second release added Log4j features, such as the ability to log to many different destinations (such as external file, mail, console, and SMTP). In the next release (scheduled for January 2004), Log4plsql will add an applicative framework for checking errors, logs, traces and exceptions in PL/SQL code-supporting automatic management of Oracle error log messages, writing of logs and traces in the alert.log and in the Oracle trace files, easy debugging (error stack, call stack, assert, and so on), the addition of custom log level, and more. " Please kindly advice. Regards, Chenhui =20 |

Hi - Do you know of any "standards" that companies may have implemented relative to the use of Log4PLSQL? For example - Issue an information log message containing the name of the package and module name at the beginning of each package's procedure or function ... If you know of any, or have any suggestion regarding such standards, I would really appreciate your input. We're going to try to use this product within a new application we are developing here, and I want to be sure we are doing it RIGHT! Thank you so much. JoAnn |

I have changed then function calleurname and now returns line numbers
for calls. I think it is very useful and should figure in the next
release. the code is this:
FUNCTION calleurname return varchar2
IS
endOfLine constant char(1) := chr(10);
endOfField constant char(1) := chr(32);
nbrLine number;
ptFinLigne number;
ptDebLigne number;
ptDebCode number;
pt1 number;
cpt number;
allLines varchar2(4000);
resultat varchar2(4000);
Line varchar2(4000);
LineNumber varchar2(10);
ptDebCode2 number;
UserCode varchar2(4000);
myName varchar2(2000) := '.PLOG';
begin
allLines := dbms_utility.format_call_stack;
cpt := 2;
ptFinLigne := length(allLines);
ptDebLigne := ptFinLigne;
While ptFinLigne > 0 and ptDebLigne > 83 loop
ptDebLigne := INSTR (allLines, endOfLine, -1, cpt) + 1 ;
cpt := cpt + 1;
-- traite ligne
Line := SUBSTR(allLines, ptDebLigne, ptFinLigne -
ptDebLigne);
ptDebCode := INSTR (Line, endOfField, -1, 1);
UserCode := SUBSTR(Line, ptDebCode+1);
ptDebCode2 := INSTR (Line, endOfField, -1, 4);
ptDebCode := INSTR (Line, endOfField, -1, 5);
LineNumber := SUBSTR(Line, ptDebCode+1,ptDebCode2 - ptDebCode-1);
IF instr(UserCode,myName) = 0 then
IF cpt > 3 then
resultat := resultat||'.';
end IF;
resultat := resultat||UserCode||(CASE WHEN LineNumber IS NULL
THEN '' ELSE '('||LineNumber||')' END);
end if;
ptFinLigne := ptDebLigne - 1;
end loop;
return resultat;
end calleurname;

In Log4PlSql (version 3.1.3.1) there is a problem setting the level for 'log4plsql' log4j logger. Namely, the next line inside the configuration file seems to have no effect (all messages will be passed down to the root logger, i.e. as it would be in case of = log4j.logger.log4plsql=3DALL): log4j.logger.log4plsql=3DWARN The technique presented in the official documentation is also broken. Any suggestions? Thanks! |

Dear,
In the new release of Log4j the DB appending is now based on 3 tables instead of 1, as initially proposed in various implementation of an appender to the DB.
Herewith the new proposed DB structure in Log4J (logging-log4j-1.3alpha-8\src\java\org\apache\log4j\db\dialect).
Has there plans to move Log4PLSQL to a a similar structure ... ?

The fact that you write to a DB will always make the process slower (than writting to a file) per se. Now many elements should be considered (DB has huge memory, multi process, IO's in C/C++ versus pure Java) to confirm this but I can afford a small performance impact to gain system wide improved reporting, facility, ... ! ! ! What I found funny is that nobody mentionned the work of the jdbc-appender http://www.dankomannhaupt.de/projects/ Their tables looks more appropriate for Java than the simple tables of Log4plsql. I think I will inspire myself from the code of Heri and adapt the work of the log4plsql to have NDC in the table too ! \T, -- Any fool can write code that a computer can understand. Objet: Extension to log4plsql
Message body follows:
Hello,
I downloaded log4plsql and I think it is a fantastic product.
I had no problems toinstall and to get first tests running.
I'm very interested in using the tool in my applications. I
have a tool that can also log events via dbms_pipe to a
running background process. But it is completly inside the
DB and writes out with utl_file.
One thing that I ran into with log4plsql is when you use the
background logger and the background process is not running,
the application stops because of the filled pipe.
I solved that problem in my packages. If you are interested
I can give you a tip.
I think it would be also useful in log4plsql if the
application doesn't hang when the background job doesn't run.
I will go on testing log4plsql and find out the features.
I'm also member of the DOAG which is the German Oracle
Usergroup and I'm thinking about a presentation of log4plsql
when I found out about the features.
If I find the time I think about a german translation of the
documentation.
Regards
Detlev Mörk

Hi,
I was just going through LOG4PLSQL. It would indeed help developers a
lot..Good One.. But in our application we have almost around 1000
Procedures/Packages/Triggers/Functions altogther where we have used
DBMS_OUTPUT package. Is there a way to configure to use this LOG4PLSQL
directly without making any changes to the existing code manually?
Looking forward to hear your suggestions on this

The background process is only needed if you want to log via DBMS_PIPE, which is then read by the Java background process and logged through Log4J. If you don't need that log path, you don't need the background process. On 10/10/05, log...@li... < log...@li...> wrote: > > Hello, > > I'm just about to start evaluating log4plsql. Hello, I'm just about to start evaluating log4plsql. The DBAs are refusing to install it unless I tell them what the background process does and why it has to be left running. The script runs the following . ./setVariable.sh cd $LOG4PLSQL_HOME echo start listener java log4plsql.backgroundProcess.Run ./properties/log4plsql.xml Does anyone either know what this does, or know where the relevant documentation is. Thanks! This is an email from the CPP Group Plc, Holgate Park, York, YO26 4GA; telephone +44 (0)1904 544500. This message may contain information that is confidential. Hi! I found following code in plog.log, LOG4PLSQL_VERSION =3D '3.1.3.0' = (similar in older versions)): ... hdr :=3D TO_CHAR(pLDATE, = 'HH24:MI:SS')||':'||LTRIM(TO_CHAR(MOD(pLHSECS,100),'09'))||'-'||getLevelI= nText(pLLEVEL)||'-'||pLSECTION||' '; ... sys.DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT(hdr); ... If pLSECTION is very big (several calls through packages) then following = error happens: ORU-10028: line length overflow, limit of 255 chars per line. First recommendation: Filter out in plog.callurname duplicate items, eg. call stack in the = same package, to shorten pLSECTION. Second recommendation: Substring the second line above before output it to a length lower than = 255 and think about exactly the wrapping which follows in plog.log. =20 With kind regards / Mit freundlichen Gruessen -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ----------- Dipl.-Ing. You would need to use a different log context object for that module - mayb= e make a package global that is initialized in the package body BEGIN section= , and then use it for all log calls in that package. Hi, I want to use LOG4PLSQL for debug information and i have a question about it? Is it possible to set the debug level for just one module (procedure) instead for the whole application? Thanks Luc, thank you very much for your time and replying me. I have solved this problem by creating multiple background processes and= =20 each process has different PIPE name. For the same process, PIPE name must be same for Stored Proc context and= =20 log4plsql.properties file --Raja On 8/29/05, Luc Tanguay <luc...@be...> wrote:=20 >=20 > Raja, >=20 > it may be possible to use section names with different log4j loggers. > For example, if you define the section named "firstSection", the > log4j.properties could have a line like: >=20 > log4j.logger.log4plsql.PIPENAME.USERNAME.firstSection=3DDEBUG, myAppender >=20 > where > PIPENAME is the name of the Oracle pipe (default is LOG_PIPE) > USERNAME is the Oracle user using the LOG4PLSQL package >=20 > Each section (or subsection) could have its own logger. >=20 > I got this info by looking at the source code for ReaderLogDataBase.sqlj > but I've not experienced it myself. > Can somebody confirm this? >=20 > Luc >=20 >=20 >=20 > log...@li... a =E9crit : >=20 > > Please let me know if it is not possible using the current log4plsql > > context. > > > > Thanks > > Raja > > > > > > On 8/24/05, *Raja Ram* <raj...@gm... > > <mailto:raj...@gm...>> wrote: > > > > Hi, > > > > I am just exploring the way log4plsql is working and I want some > > clarification. > > > > I have some stored procs like SP1, SP2, SP3 etc. and I have > > implemented log4plsql there. Raja, it may be possible to use section names with different log4j loggers. For example, if you define the section named "firstSection", the log4j.properties could have a line like: log4j.logger.log4plsql.PIPENAME.USERNAME.firstSection=DEBUG, myAppender where PIPENAME is the name of the Oracle pipe (default is LOG_PIPE) USERNAME is the Oracle user using the LOG4PLSQL package Each section (or subsection) could have its own logger. I got this info by looking at the source code for ReaderLogDataBase.sqlj but I've not experienced it myself. Can somebody confirm this? If you are using the Log4Plsql Java background process to process log statements with Log4J, then just configure each package to use a different context name, which will translate to a Log4J Logger name.=20 Each logger can have it's own FileAppender configuration to write to a different file.
