tar with bz2 hangs

the command:
time tar -kxjf linux-2.4.4-2002_12_04.tar.bz2 2>&1 |
cat > /dev/null

needs about 30 seconds with kernel 2.4.25

tar gives warnings if the file already exists to stderr so I
pipe it through cat to delete the error messages

If I use this command the second time with kernel
2.4.22-openmosix3smp then it hangs endless and ps -
afx shows that all processes are wait_s

if anybody can help me...
