The VDP status register seems to be different for V99x8, TMS9xxx and Toshiba T6950. This may be used for VDP detection purposes. But as openMSX doesn't implement these differences (behaviour of the test programs is like V99x8), future software that will rely on this will fail in openMSX.
To me there is no clear mechanism or solution yet, so more investigation is probably needed to understand why the test programs are behaving as they are.
