IMHO the menubar should contain all of the open save buttons, the player control buttons and the quick add and edit buttons. If this goes ahead I'd be happy to make some icons with photoshop provided that you give me the specifications

File menubar option

Something we should consider is that it's generally conventional to put all open, close, save, import and export type options under a menu option called "File". However I equally like our straight-to-the-point menus, so this one is just for consideration

Enhance Quick Add functionality

It might be a bit more convenient if focus automatically was given to the new row when quick add is used.

On Open/Close check for Error

I think it would be appropriate to have OSE check if a subtitle file has errors such as overlaps when saving and opening

Add subtitle and pause on release

I think it would be really useful if we extend the functionality of the "add subtitle and pause" button by setting the "show" value to the time when the button was pressed and the "hide" value to the time the button is released. Users would use this by holding the button for the duration of the relevant audio, roughly setting the timing for the subtitle. This would be great way for speeding up the timing process by having a rough sketch of the timing already.

Since not everyone may want to sub like this we should make this an option.

Seperate Window for Video

Reducing the size of the video preview was a great idea as subtitling often involves the audio part of a video however there are moments when visual elements needs to be subbed as well (e.g. foreign language signs). I think it would be a great idea to either have an option to increase the size of the video preview would allow a separate window to hold the video preview (and video controls), this would also allow users to take advantage of multiple monitors

Add subtitle and pause

I've tried my hand at subbing a couple of my own videos and I think it would be extremely convenient if there could be a button that pauses the video while also creating a new row in the subtitle table. The reason being that subtitlers need time to write subtitles before resuming the video. This would also give them time to set the show and hide values correctly.

change interface orientation for RTL languages

it would be nice if the orientation of the interface would change from LTR to RTL for such languages that would need it.
at the moment, for RTL languages, the labels of all the controls are on the wrong side of the control.

example: in hebrew the box to set the 'show' timing (at the bottom-left of the main window) looks like this:

(label): xxxxxxxx (the x's represent the control box)

this is equivalent to the LTR languages displaying the same thing like this:

xxxxxxxxxx :(label)

which is all messed up.

i assume this is a really big deal to implement, but it would be nice to see.
i know GTK+ can detect the language orientation and switches the interface orientation automatically to match, so perhaps .NET has a similar automated mechanism.

bundled codec pack

the program relies on the windows media player to properly play video/audio. however, WMP11 doesn't come with many common codecs (such as divx). as a result, many .avi files will not play properly in OpenSubtitle-Editor out of the box.
to remedy this, in the installation sequence (the .msi), i would really like to see an optional install of a codec-pack containing common codecs (but no players, i hate installing a million players :P). something similar to the k-lite-basic codec pack (perhaps you could even use that pack? i don't know if it's free to re-distribute). obviously, there should be a short textual explanation for the reasons to install this codec pack and also an easy way to uninstall it separately from the ose.

also, in case the ose encounters a codecless video, it would be a great help to users if the error msg contained some links to places where these codecs might be found (for example: http://www.wmplugins.com/ and http://www.fourcc.org/\). i know the program can detect this state of missing codec (or at least a general WMP error state), because in v 0.1.1.1 i get an unhandled exception when i try to play a video with no valid codec.
