distutils in the FreeBSD port of Python doesn't compile C code with -Wall, so I didn't see how many &lt;br /&gt;
warnings there were), and doesn't run because of one call to _mkdir() in sys_python.c&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Changing that to just a plain mkdir() makes things ok. &lt;p&gt;fails with:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;SZ_GetSpace: overflow&lt;/p&gt;
