It's much more "stealthy," to have them deoped in large channels, as an otherwise unruly user would be much more inclined to behave if the "@" prefix is being thrown around. My suggestion would be as follows:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;!set NoAutoMode 1 = No modes will be automatically granted, be it an OP or voice.&lt;br /&gt;
!set NoAutoMode 0 = Modes will be automatically given to authenticated users upon joining.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To see examples of my scenarios in action, see the larger channels on the Freenode IRC Network, such as ##FreeBSD. They use a different system, of course, which would be atheme's "flags," by setting -O.&lt;/p&gt;
