If I do get around to doing this, I'll likely add the transparent mode as well from that same reference... it's cleaner and doesn't require the | character to be treated special.

ah OK, I went for GS due to Xon/Xoff flow control breaking the control codes to change text colour (probably the code used the most) and change the pallette. Apparently GS is 'safer' according to the manual, but I'm yet to work out how.
