Tivodecode fails on transport streams (segfault), which would be because it is still treating it as a program stream. Looks like the file still consists of a 15k header with a valid but scrambled TS after that; a series of 188 byte packets, some with the scramble bit set (looks like every 4th video packet, and possibly all of the audio packets). There's also an odd looking PID (0x2aa) which has the string 'TiVo' as the first 4 bytes of the payload...

I'm happy to provide a couple of sample files if anyone wants to work on it :)

MPEG output options for Quicktime MPEG2 plugin?

The MPEG2 file output by tivodecode is currently not compatible with Apple's Quicktime MPEG2 plugin, but works fine with the open source VLC program. Since getting Apple to support whatever variation of the MPEG2 codec this is, would be an exercise in futility, could you tell me what it is that causes it not to work properly?

Could we have an option in tivodecode to output Quicktime compatible MPEG2 streams? I don't know the MPEG parlance.... A PES stream to a TS stream or... whatever it is called?

Thanks!

I know you're probably scratching your head. Here's what's going on:

I'm only using my PC for now with TiVo - I copy recordings off of my TiVo before they get deleted to free up space (I only have 80 hrs), and then when I want to watch a movie that's on my PC, I upload that recording back.

I have a bunch of MPEGs from when I owned a ReplayTV (short story is that I upgraded to digital cable, the IR blaster worked erroneously for channel changing, the ReplayTV wouldn't talk to the digital cable box via serial (even though it has a serial port), ReplayTV Corp said "we won't implement serial for digital cable boxes", so I dumped ReplayTV for TiVo, which does support serial to digital cable boxes).

I now have these MPEGs which I got from my old ReplayTV via DVArchive. In order to watch them now on the TiVo, I have to use Tivo.Net, which has all kinds of problems:
- it's a CPU hog,
- it has to completely re-scan through the ENTIRE recordings directory and subdirectories every time I add a movie to that directory, and
- I have to give it at least a 5 minute start before playing the movie.

On the other hand, if I download a recording off of the TiVo via the HTTPS screen or with TiVoDesktop, and then choose to view it later, I can upload it with TiVoDesktop - and the upload is MUCH MUCH faster than with TiVo.Net (i.e. I can start playing immediately as opposed to waiting 5 minutes, and it copies the movie up much faster because - I'm guessing here - it doesn't have to re-encode the file).

So that's why I'm looking for a way to re-encode my MPEG files to TiVo format. Ideas? Suggestions?

rework handling of scrambled packets

currently, the types of scrambled packets are hardcoded in several places. This has already bitten me, for the AC3 audio bug. I want to change the handling so that any packets marked as scrambled would be decoded and would not require hacking the code if a new encoded type were discovered.

Make web site nicer

I am no good at writing snazzy web pages, as evidenced by the lame page currently up there.
