IMAP Authentication not working

I can't get the IMAP authentication working with WebMail:

[Aug 31, 2002 4:56:11 PM] - WARNING -
IMAPAuthentication: user matthew authentication failed
(imap host: wakefield).
[Aug 31, 2002 4:56:11 PM] - ERROR - Connection to
localhost.localdomain/127.0.0.1: Authentication failed!

I'm using:
* Webmail 0.7.8
* Cyrus IMAP 2.0.16-4 (works with other clients using
CRAM-MD5)
* Cyrus SASL 1.5.24-20
* Redhat Linux 7.2

error message when saving to folders

when i try to save an email message to a folder i get
the following message:
"net.wastl.webmail.exceptions.WebMailException: This
operation is not allowed on a closed folder"
followed by many java(?) debug lines that tell me in
what compiled piece of code the error occured. typical
of these are the next two lines shown here:
" at FolderList.handleURL(FolderList.java,
Compiled Code)
at
net.wastl.webmail.server.ToplevelURLHandler.handleURL
(ToplevelURLHandler.java, Compiled Code)".
when i go back to the INBOX the email message is still
there (and marked for deletion). if i exit (Logout)
and re-enter (Login) then the message is no longer in
the INBOX, of course.
i'm not real bright but if someone can point me in the
right direction i'll work real hard without bothering
anyone too much.
