What is new since the last release?
* This release mainly addresses the recently discovered and fixed
Shellshock vulnerability of the bash shell. For further details,
please see the https://shellshocker.net website.
* The system now uses the more current backported Linux kernel version
3.16.3 as its standard kernel. The debian installer's installation
routine still relies on the the standard Wheezy 3.2 Linux kernel.
* Since we don't need to limit the ISO image to CD size, all language
support available in Debian/Wheezy has been re-enabled. The language
of the installation routine will be the system's default language.
* The ISO image now offers the choice to boot directly with either an
American or British English environment, and also in Catalan, Danish,
German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Slovak, Norwegian, Polish,
and Portuguese. In addition, many more languages are supported.
* Firefox and Thunderbird now offer the possibility to switch their UI
language according to the current user's LANG environment variable.
Still missing languages can be installed via the addons service.
* The included firefox version 32.0.3 has been preconfigured using the
addon Classic Theme Restorer to maintain traditional usability.
* This release is still built on top of Debian stable release Wheezy,
but contains all updates and security fixes accumulated up until the
date this final wmlive release version was built.
Some known issues:
* The more recent 3.16.3 kernel from the wheezy-backports branch is
used as standard kernel for the live system and once the system is
installed to disk. The Debian Installer remains being based on the
3.2 kernel, but is only used for the actual installation phase.
* For 32bit systems, to enable bootstrapping and installing Window
Maker Live also on vintage computers, a i486 Linux kernel is used as
least common denominator. The multi core features of Core2Duo and
later processors require a i686-pae kernel, which will be available
via the grub boot menu once the system has been installed to disk.
After installation, the kernel flavour not required for normal system
operation can be safely removed.
* The binaries for Firefox/Thunderbird versions shipped with wmlive
were directly downloaded from ftp.mozilla.org and are not managed by
the Debian package management system. If an upgrade of these programs
is needed, manually run the mozfetch command as root or via sudo in a
terminal window.
* To largely maintain a uniform look and feel based on the gtk2step
based Gnome theme which mimicks the Window Maker WINGs widget set,
some limitations for package installations apply. Extensive use
of apt-pinning was made, in order to shape package selections and to
keep out GTK3 based applications. Please revise /etc/apt/preferences
and modify it accordingly to get rid of these limitations if you
plan to upgrade/install more recent packages.
* Dialogs of the main wmlive scripts and menus are mostly in English,
and translation quality and extent varies for the included languages.
While translation of the user interface is not as complete as users
might wish for, further internationalization requires the practical
contributions of dedicated helpers.
