NoteBook FanControl (NBFC) is a cross-platform fan control service for notebooks. It comes with a powerful configuration system, which allows to adjust it to many different notebook models. Currently, there are no pre-built releases for Linux, but you can easily build NBFC yourself. In general the NBFC Wiki is the first place to go if you have any questions. If you want to build NBFC from source, the first thing you have to do is to download the source code. You can easily clone the NBFC repository via git. Make sure the Mono runtime + development tools are installed on your machine (Debian based distros: mono-complete, Arch based distros: mono). Config files are an integral part of NBFC, because they define how NBFC interacts with your notebook's embedded controller (EC). The EC monitors your system's temperatures and controls the fan(s). It sits on the motherboard or is integrated into a Super I/O chip & is connected to the Southbridge via the Low Pin Count (LPC) bus.

Macs Fan Control is an open-source repository supporting the development of Macs Fan Control, a powerful macOS utility that gives users granular control over the thermal behavior of Apple computers. While the GitHub repo primarily tracks issues, feature requests, and localization files for the application, the utility itself allows real-time monitoring and control of fan speeds based on temperature sensors, helping users balance cooling performance and acoustics. It supports a wide range of Macs, including recent Apple Silicon models with M3/M4 chips, and can adjust fans to respond to specific temperature sources, not just default system profiles. Users commonly employ this tool to keep systems cooler under heavy workloads or to reduce fan noise in quiet environments. Lenovo Legion Linux (LLL) brings additional drivers and tools for Lenovo Legion series laptops to Linux. It is the alternative to Lenovo Vantage or Legion Zone (both Windows only). It allows you to control features like the fan curve, power mode, power limits, rapid charging, and more. This has been achieved through reverse engineering and disassembling the ACPI firmware, as well as the firmware and memory of the embedded controller (EC).

mbpfan is a lightweight daemon for Linux that provides fan speed management for MacBook and MacBook Pro hardware. It reads temperature data via the coretemp kernel module and drives fan speeds through the applesmc interface, making it especially valuable for users running Linux natively on Apple hardware where automatic thermal control may be lacking. The daemon supports multiple processors and multiple fans, allowing flexible configurations for complex Mac models, and aims to keep systems both cool and quiet by dynamically adjusting fan behavior. While originally based on Allan McRae’s mbpfan, this enhanced version expands compatibility and tuning options. It’s especially useful on Linux installations where default drivers don’t effectively communicate with Apple’s proprietary sensor and fan hardware. Users often pair it with custom configuration profiles to match their preferred balance of noise and temperature control.

HWSensors is a software bundle that includes drivers and applications that allow you to access information from hardware sensors available on your Mac. FakeSMC is an open source SMC device driver/emulator developed by netkas (http://netkas.org/). NOTE: FakeSMC & Plugins starting from v915 provide additional sensors information to HWMonitor then running on Macs. Oh My Fan! is a very useful app. It allows you to adjust your fan speed to make your Intel Mac run cooler. Benefit Highlighting: * Run in background mode with the CPU temperature info diplayed in the menu bar. * Drag the pointer in dashboard to adjust the fan speed. * You can control the fan speed from within the menubar easily. * See the temperature values in either Celsius(℃) or Fahrenheit(℉). * You can choose whether the Oh My Fan! will start at login, and I recommend do so. The Okapi Viewer app is intended for use by owners of Okapi solar air heater fan control systems. It is used to monitor data (inlet, outlet, ambient temperatures and fan speeds) broadcast by the Okapi systems that use the optional Bluetooth transceiver module. The app can also be connected to "hacked" Okapi systems by wiring a PL2303 USB adapter (or similar) to the "hacked" Okapi.

Phoebetria lets you take control of your BitFenix Recon fan controller on more operating systems than the official software. It offers all of the same features as the official software, with the exception of remote access, and has been tested on Windows, Linux, and OS X. The current plan is that future releases will add functionality and control that the official software does not provide -- giving you even more control over your fans.
