Wouldn't be that easy, we had for example 12.000 downloads of Beta 5 -> 12000 * 30 MB = 360 GB in 2 month. :-(( And I don't want to change DL into a commercial license. -- cu Heiko http://www.devil-linux.org |

Hello, first of all: I like the idea of donations very much. People CAN pay but they aren't forced to. (Paypal would be fine since it's easy to use and fast. A server in a 1U-design for example doesn't cost more than 600 ?uros) Before we think about changeing the license we have to think about one important question: who owns the devil-linux code. A lot of people have contributed code to the devil-linux community. If we change the license and charge any fees we'll have to ask everyone for his permission, right ? I remember that sourceforge did the same when they changed the license. We have to make sure that devillinux will be available for free to every private user. The idea of a enterprise-license for companies is not bad. What about additional alternative models of makeing money: selling support, selling the development of specific modules and consulting and so... If you have a look at Mnogosearch, a free search-engine, (http://www.stammwitz.de/mirrors/udmsearch/) you'll see that they are offering the software for free, BUT: - the windows version consts money - the user can pay for an installation-service of the software on his machine - it might be possible to sell this product as an ASP which runs on the sellers machine and indexes a customers website. Hi I was thinking about opening a paypal account for donations to Devil-Linux. We would see by this way, how much the people really would really donate. Another thing I was thinking about, to do it like Dansguardin ( http://dansguardian.intmain.com/ ) and give out a download license. This means that DL is still under GPL, but companies have to pay a certain amount in order to have a valid DL license. I was thinking about an amount between $10-$50 per company and release. Personal use and non-profit organizations for free, of course. This means it would be an enterprise license for the current release (they can install as many servers as they want). Active developers would have special rights, of course. Another thing would be including commercial virus scanners and other products. But for this, we would have to provide a commercial and free version. But I don't like this idea. But I have the bad feeling, that we have to do it, to get there, where we want to be. When we do this, we could eventualy effort our long planned own server and other services. What do you think about it? Does somebody have some knowledge about the tax situation? I'm currently living in the U.S., but I'm pretty sure that there will be some issues. -- cu Heiko http://www.devil-linux.org |

Meaning it should check if the data can be read back afterwards (but has to remount inbetween checking) . Just lost whole config because floppy got CRC errors and because it was during the configuration phase I did not make a backup inbetween reboots. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=410643&aid=521540&group_id=34096 |
