Hi I have a Canon S500. When I print a test page, it seems as though no black ink is being used for colours with any hue. That is, white-to-black gradients work fine, and white-to-red gradients work fine, but black-to-red gradients go something like (black, white-red). A small amount of C, M or Y seems to turn the black cartridge off altogether. After a bit of hacking, I edited the upp file and changed the driver (-sDEVICE) from "uniprint" to "bjccolor". This resulted in the colour/black mixing working ok, except that there was far too much black (what was previously a 10% black block now looks more like a 40% black block). On the black-to-red gradient, anything less than 80% red appears completely black. Can anybody suggest what I need to do to get reasonable colour printing? Obviously the capability is in there somewhere, it's just not set up 100% correctly. Regards David Turner |

Hello Michael! Thank you for your answer by email. I was not sure if this is a bug or a configuration problem - but now I posted the problem at cups.org. With information about OS, compiler, and configure options (Redhat 7.2, gcc 2.96, no options). Please use the form at:
http://www.cups.org/str.php
to report bugs; we'll need to know the OS, compiler, and configure
options you're using.

Hello!
Sorry for posting directly after registering for mailinglist - but I
can't found any FAQs or Forums for "ESP Ghostscript" and the search with
GOOGLE was not successful.
My problem:
I installed CUPS (CUPS 1.1.20rc1) and (ESP Ghostscript 7.07.1rc2) -
compilation of source code - with RedHat 7.2.
While printing the testpage nothing happens and the following error occurs:
D [06/Sep/2003:19:04:54 +0200] [Job 17] Error: /invalidfont in findfont
...
D [06/Sep/2003:19:04:54 +0200] [Job 17] Last OS error: 2

E [06/Sep/2003:19:04:54 +0200] [Job 17] No pages found!
(see more lines at the end of the mail.)
I tried to compile Ghostscript directly with my fontpath - but the same
error.
My GS-configuration (gs -h):

I am able to successfully compile 7.05.6 on Mac OS X as long as I make sure that the configure script doesn=B9t find the gimpprint-config file. There is something in there that is setting some variable and screws up the whole process. Sure, it will configure ok but then when it goes to compile it bombs out asking for libintl.a in the root. No one seems to have clue on this. I have been beating my head on it. Also when it hits the gimppring-config file it stops finding things as well. For example : checking for memchr... no checking for memmove... no checking for memset... no checking for mkdir... no Anyone have an idea as to what could possibly be causing this? I have successfully compiled it without the gimpprint-config but I need the gimpprint support in there. Help! Is there a way to remove ghostscript from my machine?? I'm desparate, becuase since I installed ghostscript I can't print anymore in ANY way to my HP Laserwriter... My HP Laserjet 4M is not working anymore under OS 10.2.2 on my powerbook G4. I used it before with 10.2 and 10.2.1 through Gimp print, but now it stopped.. When I print the print center comes up, it says printing... I see the lamp on my HP printer flashing so it's workingbut then everything stops and no print is made and everything returns to normal, so it looks that it's printing, but no print comes out!!I tried all the different PPD's on the net, tried it through the standard printer drivers of 10.2.2, used the print center repair, repaired permissions etc etc.. but nothing works (except when printing from OS9)!! And on my other G3 it is actually working with 10.2.2!!What could this be? I tried everything, PRAM, OF reset, prefs, permissions, print center repair etc.. What could be the culprit I'm thinking now is that I installed Ghostsript also on this machine. Anyone knows how to remove it?? (I have it on my powerbook where printing is not working, nt on my G3 where the printer works) thanks, Iwan |

Hello, I have Linux Mandrake 9.0 running including CUPS and ESP Ghostscript 7.05.5. Within my LAN there is also a Apple PowerBook (MacOS 10.2.1). On my Mac I can see the printers which are connected to the CUPS server on Mandrake. The problem is that special characters which are printed from MacOS over Mandrake's CUPS server are not printed correctly. Even saving a PDF file from MacOS' printer dialoge and printing it from Mandrake does not work correctly, although acroread and xpdf on Linux show the special characters correctly. I will attach a little test file (named "umlauttest.pdf") which was created by MacOS and is not printed correctly on Linux. "gs umlauttest.pdf" shows also an error message: > [claus@thor claus]$ gs umlauttest.pdf > ESP Ghostscript 7.05 (2002-09-02) > Copyright (C) 2002 artofcode LLC, Benicia, CA. All rights reserved. > This software comes with NO WARRANTY: see the file PUBLIC for details. > Processing pages 1 through 1. > Page 1 > Error: /typecheck in --length-- > Operand stack: > [some more stuff...] What is wrong? Is the problem of not being able to print special characters correctly a problem of ESP Ghostscript? Thanks for any hint! Claus |

A better workaround for this bug mentioned there is that using ps2pdf13 instead of ps2pdf,ps2pdf11, or ps2pdf12 solves the problem. José Fonseca |

I'm sorry change again, but somehow the changes I made my work (a presentation), confuse-me. The bug does exist on ghostscript 7.05 as well, so it's not a regression. Anyway one see a sample of the problem on http://mefriss1.swan.ac.uk/~jfonseca/chest/bugs/ . On the 2nd page of test.pdf the word "difficulty" appears as "diffi culty". The test.ps is the original PostScript document from which the pdf was generated by doing: ps2pdf -sPAPERSIZE=a4 test.ps test.pdf I'm going to forward this to the ghostscripts lists then. Regards, José Fonseca PS: One doesn't get much feedback on this list, does it? |

I've went back to ghostscript 7.05 and this problem doesn't happen, so this is actually a regression of espgs. The ps2pdf script in espgs breaks ligatures - words like "file" appear as "fi le". According to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?archive=no&bug=132035 the problem was already fixed on ghostscript. Gentoo Linux now uses exclusively espgs and I just noticed this problem now so I'm unsure whether this is a regression of espgs or ghostscript itself. If this should be reported elsewhere please say so. I can also provide a quick testcase if you wish. Also, the fix suggested in the above link also works with espgs. Thanks. José Fonseca |

Hi, I installed espgs-7.05.3 and after a struggle with fonts it's working now.Posting here just in case someone need it. Every time I tried to use (gs,gv, cups) I got the following error : ... Unable to substitute for font. Error: /invalidfont in findfont ... I learned the hard way to install ghostscript-fonts _then_ install espgs. It sounds stupid, but keep in mind that Im not a ghostscript guru :) I've used the fonts that came with mandrake 8.1: # rpm -ivh ghostscript-fonts-5.50-6mdk.noarch.rpm --nodeps Then told configure where to find it: #./configure --with-fontpath=/usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/ The problem is configure that dont check for ghostscript fonts. So my question is: It is possible to ./configure check for fonts and suggests some way to get them (ftp:// ,etc)? That would avoid a lot of headache... Having said all that, I want to thank you for the great software you made, cups+epsgs is working very well here. regards, Marco -- The easiest way to get the root password is to become system admin. -- Unknown source |
