in your Terminal in Applications folder run "sudo xattr -cr FontForge.app", enter your password and you should be OK to run FontForge. This frequently happens on a Mac when you try to open an app that Apple hasn’t precertified. Do a web search on that message but without a specific app name and you will get more information than you need. When this happens with an app you trust—and you can trust FontForge—find it in Finder in Applications, right-click on it, select Open, and confirm that you really want to open it. I was a Windows user for forty years, now on Mac. I was recommended Fontforge but I get this message when I try to run it. Apple could not verify “FontForge.app” is free of malware that may harm your Mac or compromise your privacy. |

Good morning! For the record: This is not a Fontforge team address, just a users’ list – so no guarantees … :-) As to your question: I don’t know how important it is for you to open your .sfd files from the Finder? In other words: Why isn’t it OK to open FF first, then open the files from its File menu? Hello FontForge Team, I am currently using FontForge on macOS through XQuartz, and I am experiencing an issue when opening my font files. Whenever I try to open an existing .sfd file from Finder, FontForge launches but instead of opening the selected file (e.g., Font01.sfd), it creates a new blank document titled “Untitled1.” Because of this, I am unable to access my files normally through Finder. At the moment, I can only reopen my previous work through the “Recent Files” list. However, this workflow is unreliable, as I am concerned that if the recent list is cleared, I may not be able to access my files even though the .sfd files still exist on my computer. Could you please advise on how to fix this issue so that I can open .sfd files directly from Finder? Thank you very much for your assistance. |

Hi all, I have a font that is a scripture and uses glyph that end high, like b,o,w etc. Every glyph has a standard variant (a) and a high starting variant (a.topstart). They have diacritical markers and I can build "adieresis" with a simple click. Now I want to create adieresis.topstart, but how can I specify the components. They should be … a.topstart uni0308 … but entering a.topstart into the field yields the message "wrong format". Do I have to give those glyphs a unicode point or can I specify a name instead of a unicode point? |

Yes Cassidy it will work. You can view and edit individual glyphs from a font already installed, and create a new save with your changes, or make your own original fonts, or a combination of both. Update/correction to my previous post: https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/add-custom-fonts-on-an-iphone-or-ipad It’s a web page talking about installing third-party fonts on iPad, so more is possible than I had thought. Some questions remain… like Wakamatsu-san has already written, it’s not very clear what you’re trying to achieve. There are many viewer apps with which you can see all the characters in a font, also for iPad. But installing your own fonts on iPad isn’t possible, as far as I know: The only way to "install" fonts is to install an app that has them inside its code. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/ipad/ipad952422ba/ipados So on iPad it’s very different than on a computer, where you can install downloaded font files one by one. Even for computers, there aren’t many apps that allow you to really work with the alternative glyphs in fonts, i.e. those which don’t have a Unicode slot. Adobe InDesign is one app that provides good access to such glyphs. As you probably know, Fontforge lets you create and edit your own fonts, and also allows you to open (import) existing fonts and copy and paste outlines from them into your own font. Whether that is a good thing to do is another matter, because you’d basically be pirating other people’s work. And, as said, to get your custom font into an iPad, you’d have to write an app that includes your font. But maybe I completely misunderstand your situation? If desired, you can please describe the exact steps you’d want to take, or the result you’re aiming for. Hi, Cassidy, I’m not sure why you’re asking the FontForge Users mailing list, because as far as I know, FontForge doesn’t run on iPad at all. Also, I can’t help with your problem because I don’t hane an iPad, but by “copy glyphs”, do you mean copy the shape/outline/vector of the glyph for further editing on an image editing program, or identify Private Use Area code points used by the font so that you can use them elsewhere? Hi, I am trying to find a program where I can import fonts I have already installed and view the glyphs associated to them. I am working on an iPad and the programs such as Adobe and Procreate will not let me view glyphs. I have learned through extensive googling that I need a secondary program to view and copy/paste glyphs into the previous programs. All of the programs I have been offered have been dead ends, but I have learned very good things about font forge. Which leads me to this…I am trying to ask, will this program work for my intended purpose, and if not… are you aware of any that will? Thank you, Cassidy Childress |

I set up Mark on Mark but fontforge is not building my glyphs correctly. It completely ignores the anchors in the mark. Delving into it, I found out that it build 1e17 from 0113 0301. So to build 1e17 (Latin small letter e with macron and acute) it takes the precombined e macron version and puts an acute on to it. But it ignores the mark on mark on the acute (set to base) and on the macron (set to mark) completely. It works if I add my top-anchor (mark on acute) to the combined glyph manually, but that makes the whole mark on mark feature pointless, so.. Can someone tell how this is supposed to work? Single diacritics work well, but the double diacritics dont. THX! |

Do you know of one which is freely distributable? You can take one of the public fonts, like Linux Libertine, Linux Biolinum <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Libertine>, etc. But even with commercial fonts, if you remove or replace the font’s glyphs, there’s no problem with copyright. You need to change its name, of course, to avoid confusion, and also because font *names *are copyright-protected, more so than a font’s glyphs/shapes. |

I'm trying to debug a font and to understand what i'm doing, I created a
simply dummy with 4 glyphs - full simple test.sfd attached.
Then I set up a kerning lookup, put my glyphs in classes (A & B, C & D)
and gave class C & D a kerning of -93 on class C & D. I ended up with
this code in the sfd:
KernClass2: 3 3 "'kern' Horizontal Kerning in Latin lookup 0-1"
3 A B
3 C D
3 A B
3 C D
0 {} 0 {} 0 {} 0 {} 0 {} 0 {} 0 {} 0 {} -93 {}
- What are those {}?
- What is '3'?
Regards, rhavin;)

Microsoft has its own ideas of when a font is complete enough for certain uses. E.g. LF and/or CR may not be defined in your font, and so MS Word replaces them by a "notdef" box it takes from somewhere. Therefore, I recommend starting with an existing working font, because in it, such "hidden" but important characters are already in place. Then put in your glyphs instead of the original ones; you can blank any remaining original glyphs. I don’t understand what you wrote about putting control characters in Inkscape? All you need – I think – is that U+000A and U+000D slots in Fontforge should not be undefined. So as an alternative to modifying an existing font, you could try putting one anchor point into those two characters, so they are blank, but not undefined. I’m no expert, so take all this with a grain of salt. Good luck and please post an update :-) Gé On Fri, Dec 19, 2025 at 6:38 PM Neil Aggarwal <ne...@pr...> wrote: > > recommend determining what character is missing a code point in your > font > > > that Word is looking for and add it to your font instead. > > > > It looks like Word is trying to put some kind of marker at the end of > each paragraph, see the attached test file. > > > > I put a glyph for the paragraph mark in my font, see attached. > > > > Searching online, it looks like it might be CR or LF, but I am not > sure how to put control characters in Inkscape. > > > > Any ideas? > > > > Thank you, > > Neil > > > > -- > > Neil Aggarwal, (972) 834-1565, http://www.propfinancing.com > > We offer 30 year loans on single family houses! > _______________________________________________ > fontforge-users mailing list > fon...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/fontforge-users > http://fontforge.10959.n7.nabble.com/User-f8781.html > |

> recommend determining what character is missing a code point in your font > that Word is looking for and add it to your font instead. It looks like Word is trying to put some kind of marker at the end of each paragraph, see the attached test file. I put a glyph for the paragraph mark in my font, see attached. Searching online, it looks like it might be CR or LF, but I am not sure how to put control characters in Inkscape. Any ideas? Hi, Neil!
I’m a bit confused. The notdef character is critical to have in a font as
it shows when an expected character is not present in your font. I do not
generally recommend removing it, but do as you will. Instead, I would
recommend determining what character is missing a code point in your font
that Word is looking for and add it to your font instead.
You can always make the notdef character completely blank with no lines on
it and only a defined width.
Best of luck,
Abraham

Hello:
I created a font using Inkscape's SVG Font Editor.
When I load the font into FontForge, it has a ".notdef" glyph,
see the attached pic.
If I don't remove that glyph from the font, Word has a box at the end
of each line. If I remove it, everything works fine.
I tried to remove that glyph via a script:
#!/usr/bin/env python
import fontforge
import sys
font = fontforge.open(sys.argv[1])
font.removeGlyph(".notdef")
font.generate(sys.argv[2]+".ttf")
font.generate(sys.argv[2]+".otf")
font.close()
but that did not work.
Any idea how to do this?
Thank you,
Neil
