I'm not sure if this list is still active, but here goes. The STAF Perl interface doesn't seem to work anymore since moving from Ubuntu 12.04 to 16.04. In particular STAF::Submit is giving errors now. I thought this was my code, but even the demo script doesn't work: ./STAF.pl local ping ping Usage: STAF::Submit(location, service, request, syncoption=kSTAFReqSync) at ./STAF.pl line 29. STAF::Submit should only be requiring 3 args, per the docs. Adding the fourthone (should be only needed for Submit2) doesn't work either. Anyone seen this? Happens with both STAF 3.4.17 and 3.4.26. I've even tried compiling it from scratch and get the same result. Thanks, Scott |

Hi,
I just installed STAF on two Ubuntu 16.04 machines and able to run command
using "*staf <remotehost> <service> <request>"*. But when I try to run gui
application on remote host, it is throwing DISPLAY error. I am accessing
both Linux machines through Putty (from windows client) with X11 forwarding
enabled and also I have installed xming. Note that, if I run: *$ staf local
process start shell command "xclock" wait stderrtostdout returnstdout* , it
is working fine. But if i use:
*$ staf remotehost process start shell command "xclock" wait stderrtostdout
returnstdout*
I am getting below error:
Response
---------------------
{
Return Code: 1
Key : <None>
Files : [
{
Return Code: 0
Data : Error: Can't open display: localhost:10.0

}
Interestingly, If I have putty session running for remotehost, then clock
gui starts fine. So it seems that through STAF, X11 forwarding is not
getting enabled. Please let me know how to enable it in STAF configuration.
Regards,
Shambhu.

Yes, the /usr/local/staf/lib/perl518 directory only contains the libPLSTAF.so library for STAF support for Perl 5.18. # ls -l /usr/local/staf/lib/perl518 total 80 -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 70745 Jun 7 2016 libPLSTAF.so I was trying to tell you that the PERLLIB environment variable needs to contain the /usr/local/staf/bin directory as it contains the PLSTAF.pm module that STAF Perl suport also requires (in addition to setting PERLLIB to contain /usr/local/staf/lib/perl518). export PERLLIB=/usr/local/staf/bin:/usr/local/staf/lib/perl518 # ls -l /usr/local/staf/bin/*.pm -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 48322 Jun 7 2016 /usr/local/staf/bin/PLSTAF.pm -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 6991 Jun 7 2016 /usr/local/staf/bin/PLSTAFService.pm -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 5173 Jun 7 2016 /usr/local/staf/bin/STAFLog.pm -rwxrwxr-x 1 root root 2735 Jun 7 2016 /usr/local/staf/bin/STAFMon.pm Yes, you must have Perl installed in order to build STAF Perl support for that Perl version. Note you have to set environment variables like PERL_V518_ROOT to where you installed Perl 5.18. For example: export PERL_V518_ROOT=/opt/ActivePerl-5.18 See section "Building STAF Perl Support" in the STAF Developer's Guide at http://staf.sourceforge.net/current/stafdg.html#Header_buildPerl for more information. -------------------------------------------------------------- Sharon Lucas IBM Austin, lu...@us... Date: 12/30/2016 11:58 AM Subject: Re: [staf-users] Error while loading STAF module Thank you Sharon Lucas. Really appreciate your response and right now I badly need some guideline for this issue. When the bundle downloaded for staf, http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/staf/STAF3425-linux-amd64.tar.gz?download I am only seeing .so file. in /usr/local/staf/lib/perl518. Did I missed something ? I have installed perl myself to version 5.18.4. I had to do this as latest active perl available is much higher than supported .so for STAF. That might be the problem? At this point I am attempting to build staf from source. I could build staf core successfully. Now trying to build perl support. Using active perl is a mandatory even building from source? Thanks, Girija On Fri, Dec 30, 2016 at 11:18 PM, Sharon Lucas <lu...@us...> wrote: Hi Girija, Did you follow the instructions in section "3.0 Installation" in the STAF Perl User's Guide at http://staf.sourceforge.net/current/STAFPerl.htm#Header_Installto install and configure STAF Perl support for Perl 5.18? In order to have your Perl script find the specified module, you may need to set environment variable PERLLIB to the directory containing the STAF Perl modules (PLSTAF.pm, STAFMon.pm, STAFLog.pm), e.g. /usr/local/staf/bin for Linux. Also, set PERLLIB to the directory containing the PLSTAF library file (libPLSTAF.so on Linux) for Perl 5.18. For example: export PERLLIB=/usr/local/staf/bin:/usr/local/staf/lib/perl518 Since you are getting the following error message, it would appear that the PERLLIB environment variable does not contain /usr/local/staf/bin (which contains the PLSTAF module): Can't locate PLSTAF.pm in @INC (you may need to install the PLSTAF module) (@INC contains: /usr/local/staf/lib/perl518/ /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18.4/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18.4 /usr/lib/perl5/5.18.4/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.18.4 .) at test.plline 1. Are you using ActivePerl 5.18 ? Or are you trying to use perl 5.18 provided by the operating system. Thank you Sharon Lucas. Hi Girija, Did you follow the instructions in section "3.0 Installation" in the STAF Perl User's Guide at http://staf.sourceforge.net/current/STAFPerl.htm#Header_Install to install and configure STAF Perl support for Perl 5.18? In order to have your Perl script find the specified module, you may need to set environment variable PERLLIB to the directory containing the STAF Perl modules (PLSTAF.pm, STAFMon.pm, STAFLog.pm), e.g. /usr/local/staf/bin for Linux. Also, set PERLLIB to the directory containing the PLSTAF library file (libPLSTAF.so on Linux) for Perl 5.18. For example: export PERLLIB=/usr/local/staf/bin:/usr/local/staf/lib/perl518 Since you are getting the following error message, it would appear that the PERLLIB environment variable does not contain /usr/local/staf/bin (which contains the PLSTAF module): Can't locate PLSTAF.pm in @INC (you may need to install the PLSTAF module) (@INC contains: /usr/local/staf/lib/perl518/ /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18.4/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18.4 /usr/lib/perl5/5.18.4/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.18.4 .) at test.pl line 1. Are you using ActivePerl 5.18 ? Or are you trying to use perl 5.18 provided by the operating system. Often it is easier to use ActivePerl with STAF so you may want to try that. -------------------------------------------------------------- Sharon Lucas IBM Austin, lu...@us... STAF is returning message "Error starting the process." so it could not even start the process for some reason. This can be caused by reaching some OS limits, such as reaching the OS limit of maximum user processes, hit the open file handle limit, or not enough memory available to make the process. See the following posting in the STAF Discussion forum: - https://sourceforge.net/p/staf/discussion/104046/thread/eb304825/ Also, in general when debugging a problem starting a process, you should return stdout and stderr when running the "esxcfg-vmknic -D Storage-21" command to see if it provides more information about the problem. Though in this case, because STAF couldn't even start the process, I doubt it will return additional information. Hello, Can an automation client (in public network, not on softlayer) communicate with a server on softlayer through STAF? The softlayer server access will be achieved by using SSH, port forwarding and Putty. In order to connect to the server on softlayer, I will firstly ssh into a jumphost then port forward to the server on softlayer. How should I configure to enable my automation client to be able to communicate with the server on softlayer through STAF through port forwarding by the jumphost server? Anyone knows if it's do-able? Thanks a lot! Hi, The process you are running via your STAX job most likely completed within a second, however, the STAX job was not notified that the process completed, most likely due to a DNS problem with either the STAX service machine or the machine where the process was executed (e.g. machine 172.18.245.57 that executed the process is unable to communicate the STAF process completion message to the STAX service machine and so the STAX service machine never knows that the process completed). This issue and suggestions on how to resolve it is talked about in the STAF/STAX FAQ at http://staf.sourceforge.net/current/STAFFAQ.htm#d0e2201: 4.1.2. Why is STAX still showing a process as running, even though it has completed? If you are running a STAX Job, and it shows that a process is still running, even though the process has actually completed, this is likely a DNS problem with either the STAX service machine or the machine where the process was executed (where the machine that executed the process is unable to find the STAX service machine in order to deliver the process completion message). Refer to "Why can't my STAF machines communicate?" to resolve this problem. And, if you search the STAF Discussion forums and staf-users mailing list, you can find answers to your question. For example, also see https://sourceforge.net/p/staf/discussion/104046/thread/be36a62f/?limit=25#1744 and https://sourceforge.net/p/staf/discussion/104046/thread/9b4b7ac4/?limit=25#eee3 -------------------------------------------------------------- Sharon Lucas IBM Austin, lu...@us... Hi,
Now that you have added trust level 5 for local://local, you are getting a
different trust error. You are no longer getting a trust error trying to
submit the STAX EXECUTE request to the STAX service machine. But you are
getting a trust error when the STAX service attempts to submit a GET FILE
request to the FS service on machine 172.18.245.57 to get file
C:\STAF\suneel.xml from machine 172.18.245.57. The error message says

or higher. So, in the STAF.cfg file on machine mtvttovcd475, you need to
give trust level 4 or higher to machine 172.16.79.11. For example, add:
trust level 5 machine 172.16.79.11
Also, whenever you modify the STAF.cfg file on a machine, you must restart
STAFProc for those changes to be picked up.

Hi, I think that depends on what you have in mind. You can certainly use most STAF services independently of the application you have. STAF does not care about the kind of processes you start – so whether you have native apps or Java or any interpreted stuff does not really matter. AFAIU implementing STAF services based on C++ would require using native code (not .net), but most likely you’ll already find the services that you need available from STAF directly. I'm not sure what kind of reporting capabilities you mean. There isn't a STAF reporting service, though you could write your own STAF service (using the APIs that STAF provides) to do whatever you want. STAF provides a LOG service which allows a test case to easily and flexibly manage information that needs to be logged (see section 8.9 Log Service in the STAF User's Guide at http://staf.sourceforge.net/current/STAFUG.htm#HDRLOGSRV for more information on it). If you use the STAX service, it provides a monitoring application which allows you to interact with and monitor the progress of your jobs. See the STAX User's Guide at http://staf.sourceforge.net/current/STAX/staxug.html for more information. See the STAF/STAX documentation web page at http://staf.sourceforge.net/docs.php for a complete list of available documentation. -------------------------------------------------------------- Sharon Lucas IBM Austin, lu...@us... You can build the sample C++ STAF Device service (STAFDeviceService.dll) yourself. See the STAF Service Developer Guide at http://staf.sourceforge.net/current/stafsdg.html, particularly section 6.3 Example: Building a Sample C++ STAF Service, for more information on how to build the sample C++ Device service. -------------------------------------------------------------- Sharon Lucas IBM Austin, lu...@us...
