Sad to see that such POS for stores has became inactive. Hope it will be back I am one of the developers of a open source Restaurant POS named Floreant POS. I would welcome restaurant owners to try this and if you find it useful please pass it to your network.

As of Dec 2008 this project has changed to closed source, non-downloadable software as a service at posterita.com No further bug fixes or improvements seem likely here.
