Well, i can confirm your experiences with the EOS 5D-MarkIV and EOS 80D too. Canon has changed the methode and it seems that EOSmsg use the build-in monitor mode of the canon body to get the shutter & mirror count. I had done a reverse engineering task and capture usb at the readout process of EOSmsg. Some regular informations are captures like camera model, serial number, lense info and some more detailed and finaly displayed info.
