Great. Thanks to you both for the responses. I'll weigh the pros and cons of each and see what I want to do, but syncing a master copy in the cloud is a nice alternative that I hadn't thought of.
I am the one who normally pays the bills, and I use keypass to keep passwords for financial sites on my laptop. Could I simply copy the database file and download it onto another computer, so my wife can have access to these passwords also? FWIW her desktop is regularly updated (Windows 11 & antivirus). Or would this not be possible?
There was no subdialog going on. The issue was--in the options, I saw the number 300 in the seconds field, and thought that this was engaged. After going back to the option, I realized that the box on the left wasn't checked. :) I checked it, and all is well--it locks now. Well thanks for replying.

Today I had keepass (2.5, and then I updated to 2.5.1) open for quite a while. I went back to the computer and noticed that no login was required. I didn't have a sub-dialog open, either. I just got a Windows 11 laptop, but I'm using the same database that I've used for years and years. Is there some other option to check? Logging out is set to default values, 300 seconds (5 mins) of keepass inactivity.

Thanks a lot for your answers. I will just stick with what I have, then, until a new upgrade to KP forces me to upgrade my database file, if that day ever comes. I do have both files backed up.
(1) Quite frankly I wasn't aware that there were two separate files. So I should move one of them to another folder? I can do that easily enough, and then make sure that Keypass knows where the new location is. (2) As far as why I use a key file, I'm not quite sure. See (1) for details. (3) I do use a password. Perhaps that requires a key file?
