I hate this IDE UDMA stuff! I really hate it!
But this doesnt help, so I think, I should add the hdparm utility and 
disable UDMA directly after unpacking the configration disk.

So give a short message if it also works with the 32x CD-Rom if UDMA  is=20
disabled....

Which devil version? We've had some problems on ide systems but i think 
hiko has  fixed it.... :-|
You know the chipset of your powermate, perhaps are there some known 
tricky things under linux with it..........????

so thats all what i have...............
............perhaps your NEC PC doesn't have the label "certified for 
devil-linux"...... ;-))

I've a lot of pb on a certain kind of P.C. having 32x CDROM.
When booting, this problem occurs *very* often during booting process :

Unpacking OS
hdc: cdrom_read_intr: Bad transfer size 65534
   trying to limit transfer sizes
end_request: I/O error, dev16:00 (hdc), sector 4756
hdc: status error: status=3D0x50 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: status timeout: status=3D0xd8 { Busy }
hdc: drive not ready for command
hdc: ATAPI reset complete
hdc: cdrom_read_intr: data underrun (4 blocks)
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc) sector 4760

I've burned several CDROM, tried several P.C. of the same model (Nec
Powermate VT, Celeron 600, CDROM 32x), but this problem occurs :

   * *very* often (1 successful boot on 4 or 5 tries ...)
   * not at the same place : sometimes during "Unpacking OS", othertimes
     during "Loading configuration from floppy"

However, on other kind of P.C., all is fine.

controller. Although it boots the kernel just fine, it 
chokes later
because it is unable to mount the cd after boot.
How would I go about adding support for the symbios 
chip to the system ?
Do I need to configure it into my own kernel and put 
that on the boot
disk or is it possible to add it some other way ?

/etc/init.d/mount_cdrom is ok

But a big OOOPS, I found some SCSI drivers which I didn't 
enable in the Kernel configuration. This could be the 
reason.

Hmm, I just noticed the 0.43 release, I used 0.42 . I will download
0.43 and try again.

If you want, you can check the script /etc/init.d/mount_cdrom (hope this 
is right, I don't have a Devil-Linux System in the office) if there is 
something wrong when you use a SCSI system.

I forgott the change the setting after I tested IPSEC.

Ah damned! I'l fix it in the next release.

For a fast solution, you can just replace it with another version.
Do you have a version available, which I can use? This let's me 
implement the change much faster.

FreeS/Wan bug seems have been corrected, thank you (note:
INSTALL_FREESWAN is set by default ...).

However, "ipsec look" needs /usr/bin/paste, missing from distribution
Also, /etc/services is not complete, some services aren't present , such
as ssh ... Can you replace it with a recent one ? (I use service name
rather than port numbers in iptables script).

me that FreeS/Wan is not part of the kernel :

FreeS/WAN start script uses depmod -a, but this command 
cannot work, because /lib/modules/2.4.9/modules.dep is 
readonly (is on CD).
Modified the script, so that it works.
